In this post I will go over the steps that I use to produce bass cover videos

In this example I am covering the Rush song “Beneath, Between, and Behind”. This song is from the 1975 “Fly By Night” Album.

This was not an easy song for me to play and it did take some time to learn and practice in order to record the video without too many mistakes.

Learning the song

Sometimes I am able to learn by ear but often I am able to use tabs and other bass cover videos to help with the learning process. After I learned all the parts the next step was to practice because as we all know practice makes perfect! This song like all other songs that Geddy plays require strong fingers because in order to get the right sound you really need to attack the strings like there is no tomorrow.

Finding Isolated Tracks

The next step is to either find someone who already has removed the bass from the original studio version. I was not able to find anyone who did this for me, so I used AI driven software called Moises which allows you to upload the song to the cloud and then their software isolates the tracks

Recording the Audio tracks

The next step is to import the isolated tracks into your favorite DAW and then lay down the bass track. Once I have enough practice under my belt playing to the isolated tracks then I record the video while playing to the isolated tracks

Editing and mastering the audio tracks

At this point I mix and edit the recorded audio tracks as needed and then bounce down the tracks to a single stereo WAV file. Then I use other software to mix in the audio tracks with the video.
